Macedon Ranges Health selected for Suicide Prevention Trial

4th June 2019

Macedon Ranges Health (MRH) has been selected as one of 12 Suicide Prevention trial sites across the state, as part of the Government’s Victorian Suicide Prevention Framework.

North West Primary Health Network has partnered with the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services and is leading two of the 12 place-based Suicide Prevention initiatives.

The framework provides a ‘whole-of-government’ commitment and strategy to reduce the suicide toll. This is part of Victoria’s 10-year mental health plan, which began in 2016 and aims to halve Victoria’s suicide rates by 2025.

MRH is currently in the process of recruiting a Suicide Prevention Project Officer to lead this project and engage relevant stakeholders including; community groups, service providers, policy makers and those who have lived experiences of suicide.

Benetas CEO Sandra Hills OAM said the funding provided for this role supports our ongoing commitment to addressing the growing demands of mental health support in the Macedon Ranges region.

“We are extremely grateful to be a part of this program,” said Ms Hills.

“This trial provides a unique opportunity to create change and improve outcomes for local people who are at risk of suicide.”

MRH is involved in the Macedon Ranges Suicide Prevention Action Group (MRSPAG) which is running SafeTALK workshops throughout May, to prepare members of the local community, regardless of prior experience, to become a suicide-alert helper.

Chris Karagiannis, General Manager of Strategy and Primary Care at Benetas is in strong support of the work being done by the action group.

“The Suicide Prevention Action Group is undertaking some immensely important work for the region. I encourage as many community members as possible to get involved and further educate themselves on this issue,” said Mr Karagiannis.

These SafeTALK sessions run for three and a half hours and only cost $20. If you are interested, please direct all enquiries to info@mrspag.com.au.
