A stimulating tradition has slowly percolated at Clarinda on the Park, celebrating the heritage of the aged care home’s Greek-born residents.
The fortnightly Greek Coffee Club has grown in popularity over the past three years with residents from all cultural backgrounds congregating to enjoy the authentic Hellenic beverage.
The coffee is brewed in a Briki coffee machine with Greek-style pulverised beans. The drink is served strong with a generous helping of sugar. Some of the participants also drink a glass of cold water to combat the strength of the coffee.
During each event, residents are treated to traditional Greek music and DVDs showing traditional Greek dancing, which many residents have enjoyed most of their lives.
Clarinda on the Park is currently home to 16 residents of Greek heritage, who also receive holy communion from a priest visiting from the Clayton Greek Orthodox parish of the Three Hierarchs, once a month.
Clarinda on the Park lifestyle coordinator Lynne Johnston said the residents loved it.
“It takes them to a time when they were young. It’s special not just for them but the other residents enjoy it also,” Ms Johnston said.
Resident Effie, who was born in Greece, said she looks forward to the event each fortnight, savouring the tastes and the tunes.
“The first time I attended, I was so grateful for the chance to dance and enjoy the coffee, it makes me really happy,” Effie said.
