Benetas home care clients have experienced benefits following a Wellness and Reablement pilot, which included twice weekly physiotherapy sessions.
The program delivered an increase in client balance and overall health, with clients experiencing a reduction in the likelihood of falls and anxiety.
The eight-week program focussed on 17 home care clients who benefitted from regular visits from United Physiotherapy Group physiotherapists.
Benetas’ nursing team also assessed the suitability of clients’ participation in the program with overall health assessments.
Participants were assessed on six key measures before and after the program, including a questionnaire, quality of life (mobility, self-care, activity, pain and anxiety) and self-assessment. They were also assessed on the likelihood of falls, balance and co-ordination and the ability to perform basic everyday tasks.
All participants improved in at least one of these metrics, 10 participants improved in three or more of these metrics while the overall average health score increased.
A total of 13 participants improved their performance in activities they identified before the pilot and 10 improved their performance on activities assessed by physiotherapists, including balance.
Benetas CEO Sandra Hills OAM said the pilot found that by adding physio services, they were able to enhance the quality of life for seniors who choose to remain at home.
Ms Hills said the results would inform future programs, focussed on improving the wellbeing of home care clients.
“The pilot showed us that these types of programs can have a positive impact on health outcomes and support clients to remain in their homes longer,” Ms Hills said.
“Our collaboration with United Physiotherapy Group showed how important it is to have strong partnerships with aligned allied health providers when delivering wellness and reablement programs.
“Their experience helped shape the structure and planning of the program, leading to better client outcomes in balance, health, and fall prevention.
“It’s essential providers proactively share their experiences running wellness and reablement programs so we can all learn from each other.”
Benetas provides a range of home care services to more than 1,400 people across Victoria over the age of 65.
