Filipino-born Pablo Soledad recently celebrated his 104th birthday surrounded by family and friends at Benetas St George’s aged care home in Altona Meadows.
The personable great-grandfather of 12 was born on 22 May, 1921, as one of six siblings in Aliaga, Philippines. His childhood memories are full of moments outside and curiosity at school, particularly in social studies and world history.
He married Florentina Castelo on 6 June, 1943 in Aliaga, raising five sons Francisco, Oscar, Roberto, Napoleon and Adriano, on a farm where they grew rice and a range of vegetables.
“My happiest moments as a family were when everyone was able to come home from their commitments, and spend the holidays together, especially Christmas,” Mr Soledad said.
Tragedy struck in November, 1979 when Florentina passed away after suffering a heart attack. Pablo described it as the “saddest and most challenging time in my life”.
In 1981 and at the age of 60, Pablo started a new chapter, following his youngest son Adriano, who had moved to Australia two years earlier.
However, he continued to return to the Philippines at every opportunity to visit and spend time with his relatives and friends.
In February 1990, Pablo married Henrietta Horca. He’s enjoyed a range of activities, including morning walks, gardening, reading newspapers and, more recently, playing bingo.
The devoted Catholic also enjoys spending time with his 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
“I love spending time with my friends and being an active member of several community groups,” Pablo said.
“If I was lucky enough to win a million dollars, I would definitely keep a part of it, but I would share the rest with my family and loved ones.”
