Gisborne Retirement Living and Residential Aged Care

A New Aged Care Residence for Gisborne

The Gisborne Retirement Living and Residential Aged Care project is an important development for the Macedon Ranges and surrounding communities – one that responds to the critical need for quality aged care services for the Macedon Ranges region.

This project is coming to life.

It will bring significant social, health and economic benefits to the region, forming the centrepiece of a proposed $60 million investment announced as part of the amalgamation in 2018 of Benetas and Macedon Ranges Health.

The project will offer older people in the region the opportunity to age in place, providing a continuum of care through a co-located site offering a level of care which our ageing population needs and deserves. Located adjacent to the MRH Health Centre and near local shopping, swimming pools, lawn bowls and a cinema, the integrated facility will be a highly sought-after residential retirement location.

  • $60m holistic, integrated retirement and aged care precinct offering a unique and innovative model of care for residents.
  • Meeting the changing needs of the Macedon Ranges, with the local population forecast to grow 40% over the next 15 years and a doubling of people over 80 in the next decade.
  • The project will create up to 500 jobs during construction and longer-term employment for up to 130, plus generate economic activity for local businesses and suppliers.

Stage One

The New Oaks

Residential Aged Care to deliver a holistic 120-bed ageing experience for residents, focusing on the person through individual choice and freedom. Target opening 2023.

The design includes a number of wings with their own kitchen, lounge and dining areas, encouraging socialisation and engagement as well as larger communal spaces to bring the residents together. It also includes a hairdressing salon, wellness centre, library lounge, private dining rooms, and a worship room and reflection room. Residents will continue to have access to a registered nurse around the clock.

The design draws on extensive research highlighting the benefits of ‘person-centred’ care which, at its core, is about allowing residents to shape the way they live by putting them and their families at the heart of all considerations.

Stage two

Retirement Living

Our complex will include some 70 architecturally designed, six-star energy rated units, centred around a community hub and within walking distance to the Gisborne town centre and all it has to offer. Target opening 2025

The Retirement Living complex - stage 2 of the integrated facility - is expected to take around five years to complete following re-zoning and planning approvals. Unique in its design, the complex has a focus on resident wellbeing that is reflected in the master planning of the site. The co-location of the retirement village with the aged care home, directly adjacent to Macedon Ranges Health and all operated under the Benetas umbrella, provides an unparalleled opportunity to live in a community specifically designed with the ageing population in mind.

Making good progress

As an integrated facility, Gisborne Retirement Living and Residential Aged Care will be functional in its form and deliver high-quality fit-outs and features for residents and their families across both residential aged care and the retirement living, in a way that is environmentally friendly and complementary to the local landscape.

  • We are working with community leaders and the Macedon Ranges Shire Council to make the concept a reality and create a community asset that will sustain the community for generations to come.
  • The community sent a strong message of support for the project when they voted overwhelmingly for the MRH-Benetas amalgamation, and we have Commonwealth funding committed for up to 120 beds as part of the proposed facility.
  • Planning and rezoning approvals are underway, with timely decisions essential in order to address the forecast doubling of the region’s older citizens over the next decade.
