This week we celebrate National Volunteer Week which provides us with a great opportunity to thank, honour, recognise and celebrate the vital role our volunteers play in our community.
At Benetas, our volunteers do such a wonderful job in supporting our residents, customers and clients to stay connected and form meaningful relationships.
Volunteers at our residential and respite locations spend time with our residents and assist our lifestyle teams with activities, while our Meals on Wheels volunteers support our home care clients.
Our volunteers also provide social support and connection with the broader community through activities like the Gisborne Oaks (MRH) Men’s Shed and Corowa Court Op Shop.
The Gisborne Men's Shed has been active for over 12 years and has made a big difference in the community.
Volunteers, Michael and Gary, run a live music singalong every Friday afternoon at our Gisborne Oaks residential aged care home.
"Volunteering has lots of benefits, and it brings joy and purpose to your life. Spending time helping others also increases your self-esteem and well-being," says Michael.
The Men's Shed also runs the Young Shedman program, which allows volunteers Gunther and Roger to mentor and pass on knowledge and skills to young men.
"I chose the Young Shedman project because my goal is to make a difference in the lives of young men by passing on my years of experience," says Gunther.
"I enjoy teaching them woodwork while mentoring them on broader issues in an attempt to increase their chances of securing a job. Volunteering gives me a purpose, satisfaction and enjoyment," he said.
