Gippsland aged care site awarded for excellence
23rd July 2019
A residential aged care site in the heart of the Latrobe Valley, Benetas’ Dalkeith Gardens, was awarded for excellence in craftsmanship and construction at Victoria’s Master Builders Awards.
The local builders, BFN Developments, took home the award for Excellence in Construction of Commercial Buildings over $6 million along with the title of South East Regional Commercial Builder of the Year for their work on the aged care facility.
BFN Principle Brett Neilson says this largely boils down to the design and the quality of workmanship they brought to the job. “We bring great pride to the projects we work on, and when it comes to community initiatives like this, it’s particularly important that we get it right.”
This is part of a significant expansion of the Dalkeith Gardens aged care facility managed by Victoria’s leading not-for-profit aged care provider, Benetas.
With fourteen sites across the state, Benetas is committed to introducing its new Best Life Model of Care, an innovative approach that makes aged care as home-like as possible with apartment-style living.
The awarded expansion at Dalkeith Gardens includes apartments for 64 residents who since May this year are now living in units of eight other residents who share their kitchen, dining and living room facilities.
Dalkeith Garden’s expansion also features a new library, sports bar, café and hairdresser on site, and is designed to nurture holistic communal living with a range of courtyards and terraces.
Long term resident Noelyse Sibley who has lived at Dalkeith for 16 years says no room has felt more like home. “The apartment is so beautiful and homely, I look forward to spending the rest of my days here.”
Dalkeith Gardens’ staff also consider the residents’ quality of life to have greatly improved with the latest expansions supporting residents to grow meaningful relationships with those in their apartment.
Sharing a newly refurbished apartment with up to eight others, residents are supported to build a homelike environment with opportunities to cook and dine together and mingle in the lounge room.
Activities Coordinator Karen Siddle says the residents are already loving it. “They help themselves in the kitchen and have the option to cook with family and friends.”
The next phase of development will include renovation to the existing building to also support Benetas’ Best life Model of Care informed by best practice in aged care and exceptionally personalised care.
Construction of the site’s expansion will now go to the Melbourne’s Master Builders Awards in August to determine the Victorian Commercial Builder of the Year against the winners from the other regional zones.
BFN has been based in Traralgon for over 25 years, responsible for some 500 residences and 50 commercial projects.
