Driving Assessments

Occupational Therapy (OT) Driving Assessments determine fitness-to-drive of individuals with functional impairments due to medical conditions.

Prior to undertaking an OT Driving Assessment, your GP or specialist must submit a medical clearance report to VicRoads, who in turn will advise if you are required to take the assessment.

Fees:
The assessments will take a total of approximately 4 hours and cost $500 including GST (payable in one instalment).
If the OT believes the assessment will take a longer period of time or you require reassessment (and this involves further fees), this will be discussed with you. There will also be a separate fee paid directly to the driving instructor.

Driving Assessment Types

Off-Road Assessment

On-Road Assessment

Up to 2 hours

The off-road assessment takes place at Macedon Ranges Health. You will need to bring all VicRoads documentation, your glasses (if required), a list of medications and any other relevant documentation.

As part of the assessment, the OT may liaise with relevant organisations such as VicRoads, your GP, medical specialist or optometrist.

You will also be assessed on your physical, sensory and thinking skills and abilities related to driving.

Up to 2 hours

The on-road test takes place on a separate day and is conducted in a dual controlled vehicle with the Occupational Therapist and a qualified Driving Instructor present.

The Occupational Therapist will observe your driving performance and provide feedback at the end of the assessment. A report is sent to VicRoads with a recommendation concerning your fitness to drive.

Please note VicRoads make the final decision regarding retaining/reinstating and/or conditions on your driving license based upon the OT recommendations.
