Benetas responds to the 2015 Intergenerational Report: Australia to 2055

Benetas CEO, Sandra Hills, welcomed the release of the 2015 Intergenerational Report: Australia to 2055 and highlighted its findings in relation to how Australia will meet the challenges of ageing in the future.

Ms Hills said the report clearly showed the significant change in population demographics over the coming decades and raised important questions on its impact to society.

“What’s clear is that ageing needs to be a national policy priority and topic of discussion,” Ms Hills said.

“The Intergenerational Report paints a very clear picture that society is on the cusp of the ageing boom. Australia will have more people living longer than ever before and there will be a significant increase in the population of older people.

“As a community we must take steps to ensure our future economy, communities and health and aged care system are well prepared to this demand.”

Ms Hills said that whilst significant reform has taken place, it was important to further develop strategies on quality of life, aged care funding arrangements and service provision in light of the report’s findings.

“This challenge can be met but will require a greater discussion of ageing beyond the confines of recent debate.

“There must be a greater recognition of the impact of policy decisions as they relate to Australia’s future ageing population. To do this, it is imperative to have a cabinet-level Minister responsible for ageing who can work constructively across Government to ensure these challenges are strategically addressed.”
