Memory loss and dementia FAQs

What makes the Benetas Memory Loss and Dementia Service different to other services?

There are a number of organisations providing support to people living with dementia and their families in various ways. At Benetas, we’re confident our Memory Loss and Dementia Service offers the most comprehensive and responsive in-home service for older Victorians and their families living with dementia.

How does it work?

A highly qualified Memory Loss and Dementia Advisor will visit you at home to discuss your needs. Advisors will work with the person living with dementia and the other people living in the household. We look beyond the diagnosis of dementia. Our advisors seek to understand your unique family situation – how you work as a household, what’s important to you, some of the challenges you face (this could be related to dementia but may also include personal, social, financial issues) and options for the future. Your advisor will then develop a tailored plan that will support you, connect you to the right services, and help you make decisions about your future.

This is the Benetas difference – we look beyond the dementia, and look at the support and structures your family needs to live well at home for as long as possible.

Why does Benetas offer this service?

Benetas has over 65 years experience supporting older people and their families. Our vision is for everyone to enjoy a positive experience of ageing. Through our 13 aged care homes and range of community services, we have significant experience supporting people living with dementia in their own homes or in one of our homes. As a not-for-profit, all revenue we generate is re-directed into our services to improve the lives of older people.

In recent years, we realised there simply wasn’t enough support for the growing number of people with dementia living at home with their families. We knew that with our experience as an aged care provider and our large network of health and aged care professionals, we could do more to connect people living with dementia and their families with support and services. In response we launched the Benetas Memory Loss and Dementia Service.

The issues our family are dealing with are unique – how can you be sure you can help us?

Benetas supports over 4,000 older people and their families each year. Every one of these families has a different story to tell, with different experiences and very unique circumstances. The approach across all our services is to provide 1:1 time with each individual and their family, to truly understand their needs.

This 1:1 approach is also the focus of our Memory Loss and Dementia Service. Dementia Advisors spend time with you, to learn about and understand the issues you and your family, are facing. Your Advisor will then research and find the best solutions for your unique situation. We are confident that our Dementia Advisors will be able to provide you with assistance to meet your individual needs.

I really need help today. How long will I have to wait to receive this service?

There is no waiting period or waiting list for this service. If you need assistance our Dementia Advisor will be available to speak to you over the phone and will make a time to visit you at home as soon as possible.

Where will I turn when my Benetas Dementia Advisor isn’t available?

As part of the six-month Benetas Memory Loss and Dementia Service, you receive a personalised Dementia Information Resource Kit. So although your Dementia Advisor can’t be with you every day, you will find this Resource becomes a very useful companion and reference tool for you at home.

The Resource provides information about dementia and includes valuable tips and strategies for families and carers such as ‘communicating with a person with dementia’ and ‘suggestions for leisure activities’. It also includes useful reference materials and checklists to assist you and provide information on where to find further assistance.
