Culturally appropriate care

Meeting the needs of people from all backgrounds

Victoria is very culturally diverse. It’s what makes Victoria so great.

We recognise that sometimes people from different backgrounds may need different aged care services whether it’s levels of service, personal care, food or lifestyle.

Valuing and respecting diversity

Our partnership with a number of Migrant Resource Centres and ethnic communities allows us to deliver accessible, reliable and tailored community and residential care solutions for people from all backgrounds.

Culturally appropriate services include:
  • Multicultural training for staff
  • Ensuring clients have access to information on cultural issues
  • Culturally appropriate meals
  • A range of activities and festivities throughout the year
  • Cultural celebrations
  • Holistic care to all clients of all backgrounds and cultures
  • Encouraging and nurturing the local community and families in promoting resident independence, social exchange and positive ageing.

Cultural diversity at Benetas St George’s, Altona Meadows

More than 50% of clients at St George’s are from a different background so we have actively recruited multilingual staff. Now we have more than 20 different languages being spoken.

Centre for Cultural Diversity in Ageing

For the past nine years we have been the Victorian auspice of the Partners in Culturally Appropriate Care initiatives. The Centre for Diversity and Ageing was launched in 2006 and was developed to support and deliver culturally responsive services to meet the needs of Australia’s diverse society.
