History

Small beginnings

For over 60 years we have been caring for older Victorians.

The journey began in 1948 with a small group of volunteers who saw an urgent need within their community for quality care and support for vulnerable, elderly people.

These volunteers within the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne, decided to do something to help by starting Anglican Homes for the Elderly.

They procured a house in the inner suburb of Melbourne, Camberwell and named it ‘Tara’. They worked hard raising the funds they needed for furniture and went about making their own curtains and cooking meals for 27 elderly women.

Where we are today

In 2003, the trading name was changed and the organisation became known as Benetas, which is derived from Latin words meaning ‘a good age of life’.

Today, we are one of Victoria’s leading not-for-profit aged care service providers employing more than 1,000 staff, supported by 600 volunteers and caring for more than 2,000 individuals across Victoria.

A growing future

It’s been a long journey and we are committed to continuing to grow and innovate with Victoria, as the gap between the generations widens and the ageing population increases.
